I saw him speak at UCLA a few years ago. I remember him having to stop because he was cracking up too hard at his own writing, and I thought that was wonderful.

OK O.K. Okay

I know sometimes I can get a little pissy when people are like, “OK, Ryan, you’re right. Whatever,” and I’m like, “what do you mean by ‘OK’? Why is it abbreviated like that, and why isn’t it just spelled out – like, ‘okay,’ you know?!”

Well, I was finally pointed toward the wikipedia entry for Okay. While etymologically fascinating and wide-ranging, the part that stuck out to me was:

“The abbreviation fad began in Boston in the summer of 1838 … OFM, “our first men,” and used expressions like NG, “no go,” GT, “gone to Texas,” and SP, “small potatoes.” Many of the abbreviated expressions were exaggerated misspellings, a stock in trade of the humorists of the day. One predecessor of OK was OW, “oll wright,” and there was also KY, “know yuse,” KG, “know go,” and NS, “nuff said.”

Abbrev. fad! And from the looks of it, not a fancy one; no, that one’s pretty hardcore, KY.

I use a lot of abbrevs in my talking (mostly humorously), and I’ve been thinking of a abbrev gag comic. I think I just finished it (well, the part where I write it in my head). I could, s’pose, do a series. But that might get old and annoying, and I’m already working on a different series that should prove to quickly become old and annoying. Stay tuned for everything!

Now I can type things that don’t necessarily relate to the comic

and the comic will stay on top! Thanks, theme. I will customize you in the future. And stay up to no hours doing so.

So, news I guess.. I put together these ten comics in a ‘zine format. That’s available for one dollar or trade. Email me for ‘tails. I haven’t done very well “getting it out there.” I spent all this time writing and drawing and laying out and printing, etc., and then once it’s done I just forget about it and move on. I did put a few in Reading Frenzy, though. At any rate, after a lazy-ass break, I am slowly starting to come up with new ideas for future comics. Not all of them would fit straight into blue skies above us #future. But I can’t let that stop me. So I won’t.

Currently reading: Achewood, from the beginning. Of course I’ve had people telling me for years that I should be currently reading Achewood. Of course I have. But I haven’t. I stuck by my “yeah, but I don’t really read comics” excuse. It’s the lousy truth. Then I read this interview with the drawer/writer in the new yorker (which is basically the only thing I read, it seems), then read the sandwich duel blog posts. And I wanted more Onstad.
